The architecture of Churches of St Thomas Christians looked like non-Christian temples .We can find it from a few pre-Portuguese churches that still exists. The building was divided into the Sanctuary or Madbeha, Choir and nave. We can find out many mural paintings related to the life of Jesus Christ or saints of the church on the walls of the sanctuary .There were no statues or statues of Crucifixes in the Churches .Non-Christians apply cow dung on the floors of the temples or houses to purify though cow is considered as a holy animal. St Thomas Christians also used same on the floors of their churches. (Placid.J.Podipara) We can find ponds or other water bodies next to temples, Churches of St Thomas Christians also had the same, and there were lamps on the compound walls as well as other walls of the church just like a non-Christian local temple. Still we can find this in many ancient churches that exists like Rooha’DKhusishforane Church Muttuchira, St Marys Church Kaduthuruthy etc.

As in the front of non-Christian temples, the Churches had flag staffs, during feast days a flag will be hoisted on such staffs. Still we can find someflag ancient staffs in front of Syrian Churches like Pulimkunnu, Champakkulam etc. Now a day’s most of the nasrani churches have these types of flag staffs. The flag that hosted in this pillar like staffs communicates about some events or feasts that happen over there. (Placid.J.Podipara)
